Brisbane Street Verge Garden
This verge is an excellent example for those who are interested in starting, as it was only begun in January of this year.
Nicola Stockwell decided to create this verge garden in her new house after having success with one in her previous residence. Renovating the house had caused the verge area to become compacted and messy, and, as the verges in this area are quite wide, Nicola wanted to have less grass to maintain. She also realised that verges are underutilised and decided to take advantage of the extra space.
The area was first weeded, then cardboard was laid down and mulch was placed over the top. It was planted out in early June, and granite and sandstone rocks were placed as both appealing visual features and to provide native animals with habitat. Plant species that thrive in full sun were selected, and Nicola also prioritised those that would attract pollinators. Nicola has been rewarded for her efforts by already seeing birds attracted to the area.
