Currawong Park
Since 2021, a group of local residents have been working together to transform a once unloved, virtually vacant block of public land into an urban refuge for wildlife and a peaceful place for people to enjoy nature. Volunteers get together on weekend working bees to care for the native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers which have been progressively planted. Almost all plants have been sourced from the Tamworth Regional Landcare Nursery. In May 2023, a wet boggy area at Currawong Park was excavated to create a frog pond and subsequently revegetated with a diverse range of native plants including groundcovers, perennial grasses, rushes, sedges and shrubs.
The two large ‘shrub zones’ have been densely planted, with shrubs and grasses planted to attract native bees and birds. Logs and rocks have been added to enhance the habitat for frogs, reptiles and other animals. Volunteers come together to plant, mulch, weed or water.
Their efforts are now rewarded with the sight of butterflies, birds,
frogs, and native bees.
