Tamworth Regional Councillor Ryan Brooke and his partner Cat Fogarty have only recently started converting their suburban yard into a water efficient garden in the past year and a half. However in that time they’ve managed to remove their entire front lawn and replace it with a native and drought tolerant plants, convert one side of their house into an area for crops, plant over 20 fruit trees of various varieties to ensure a year round harvest, and turned a section of their backyard into a run for free-range chickens. All on a suburban block.
They use a mix of vermiculite in additional to composting to essentially eliminate green waste for their entire household have the goal of encouraging beneficial insects and bees with future planting.
Although Cat and Ryan’s garden is still in the early stages of development, their early planning and their experiences of trial and error so far could provide valuable insight to others looking at making their yard or garden more ecological sustainable and bio-beneficial.
