In 2019 Eliza and Doug Weekes purchased a 1000 square meter block of land during the worst drought on record. While it was a risk, it was also a blessing to see how yards in their area performed during such an extreme weather event. When their build finished in 2022, they decided to ‘rewild’ their land and plant an abundance of predominately native plants in lieu of a completely turfed back and front yard.

The couple felt a duty of care to look after the land they have the privilege to inhabit. In this time, they have learned so much about their local native wildlife and how much they need our help too. The garden consists of groundcover, a variety of shrubs and small trees to provide habitat and food sources for birds, insects, frogs and other species.

Additionally, Eliza and Doug are very passionate about growing their own food and teaching this skill to their kids. They have raised and no-dig garden beds for their fruit and vegetables as well as fruit and olive trees, chickens and more recently, a beehive. The garden is only two years old, yet it brings them so much joy every single day to have a garden that is unique, resilient and uses minimal water yet still thrives is hugely rewarding.
